“Living School” Activities

Darüşşafaka is a 7/24 hours living school. Students who come from cities out of Istanbul spend their weekends at school campus. In other words, half of the students at Darüşşafaka live 7 days of the week in the campus. There are many activities to ensure that students spend their time efficiently and they have fun. They are free to select any activities at their pleasure. Here are some of the activities:

INSTRUMENTAL SOUNDS FROM ARTS DEPARTMENT

VIOLIN
The violin is the smallest, highest pitched member of the violin family of string instruments. This instrument develops your sensitivity in a high level and fastens the process of developing practical intelligence. Even if you do not play violin in the future, your violin experience will enable you learn music beyond merely understanding how it works. 4-5-6-7th grade students at Darüşşafaka have the chance to learn to play violin during weekends.

GUITAR
The origins of the guitar go back to Spain, it is the most widely known instrument among stringed instruments. It is especially popular among teenagers; it is easy to take it out of the house as well. Acoustic guitar, electric guitar and bass guitar are highly favored in popular music which is another reason why many people prefer to play it. 6-7th grade students at Darüşşafaka have the chance to learn to play guitar during weekends.

SIDE-BLOWN FLUTE
Side-blown flute (Western concert flute) is the most commonly used flute type. It has been used in China since B.C 900. Then in the 12th century, it has been used mainly Germany in ensembles including military band. Flute became an instrument used in chamber music in 16th and 17th century. These were later modified to include six keys. However in 1600s, flute was redesigned in three sections or joints. Later on more and more keys were added to flute and it became a member of the orchestra. In 1800s, flute with four keys became the most commonly used flute and later flute with eight keys were made.

SPORTS HALLS
Sports halls and dance halls are also open on Saturdays.

TABLE TENNIS
Are you ready to play as Chinese do?
Are you ready to beat your opponents in group teams by using proper techniques. I will teach you how to win, lose and enjoy it during our trainings throughout the year. The most important part of it is you will experience them in real competitions. If you think you are the best candidate for table tennis which is played with a small ball and a racquet, we will be waiting for you in table tennis hall.

BASKETBALL
Team spirit, collective success, shoulder to shoulder struggle are prerequisites for basketball. It is an ideal activity for the ones who love basketball. Students learn how to play basketball and they are trained in developing basketball fundamentals. 4-5-6-7th grade students at Darüşşafaka have the chance to play basketball during weekends.

GYMNASTICS
Floor cushions, asymmetric parallel, balance, vaulting horse etc are some of the materials used during gymnastics trainings. Students can also compete in sports competitions. 5-6-7th grade students at Darüşşafaka have the chance to do gymnastics exercises during weekends.

SOCCER
As in the rest of the world, soccer is one of the most favorite sports for Darüşşafaka students.

TENNIS
Embracing of a tennis ball with a racket and watching the ball when it travels over the net will excite you! It will excite you more when you can play it and have the chance to practice it in the tournaments at the end of the year.

SWIMMING
In our club, students will learn basic swimming techniques such as breathing, foot-body position, and aquaplane and they will have fun. Groups are organized according to swimming levels. Students are given swimming lessons which serve to develop basic swimming techniques and styles such as freestyle, breaststroke and backstroke.

YOGA
History of yoga goes back to 5.000 years. Starting from early ages, students have to cope with exam and school stress. Yoga is there to exercise both body and mind. Moreover, kids yoga is extremely fun. Wouldn’t you like to attend yoga courses where you imitate animals, tell stories, play games, sing songs collaboratively with your peers and in return feel unconditional love and affection?

BADMINTON
The history of badminton can be traced to “Ti jian Zi” game created by Chinese people and it came to be known in Europe by British military officers stationed in India. Badminton is played both indoor and outdoor. It is a dynamic and fun racquet sport.

VOLLEYBALL
Volleyball is a team sport which is played by two teams of six players who are separated by a net. Each team tries to score points by grounding the ball on the other team’s court. This is a great opportunity for you if you like team sports to have fun and to gain sportive skills of volleyball.

FREEDOM IN CREATIVE ART WORKSHOPS
Here is the list of creative workshops offered to our students for them to learn, to have fun and to produce.

THEATRE
Theatre is a great opportunity for you both to enjoy all of the professions written in this booklet and to perform them in a real setting. You can perform a football show, a musical performance, a dance show demanding aesthetic concern or anything which you dream of to thousands of people on the stage. Come to feel this unique experience on the stage where applauds and the audience will excite you most.

HIP-HOP DANCE

MODERN FOLK DANCES
Folk dance is a historical and geographical reality in different parts of Turkey. Do you want to be a member of a dance group which will hand our folk dance down to the next generations and at the same time use modern dance and arts techniques combined with dance costumes designed with traditional motifs?

HANDCRAFTS COURSES
Attention: Those who desire to materialize their own designs. You can learn how to sew or you can learn ways to improve your sewing. Additionally at the end of the year, you may have the opportunity to wear your own design and feel like a model on the stage. You will not even realize how time flies in handcrafts courses.

THE MIRACLE OF FELT
Felt is a dense and non-woven fabric, highly popular recently. You can see the miracle of producing necklace, bags, pins and belts from colorful felts.

MAGIC GAMES
This is an introduction to the arts of illusion. Magic games will give you fun while it surprises people around you. You will improve your manual dexterity, self-control and feeling of trust. But you should promise that you will never tell anyone about your magical powers! This is a great opportunity to improve your skills, to increase your creativity and to feature your theatric skills. Come and join this magical world.

STRATEGY GAMES

CHESS
Are you ready to strengthen your memory, decision making skills and attention? If you already know how to play chess, you will have the opportunity to participate in chess tournaments and increase your experience. If you do not know how to play it, you will reach a level which will allow you to play it professionally at the end of the term. Students in the school team will represent Darüşşafaka at different tournaments. We invite all chess lovers to our club.
