GOALS OF MATHEMATICS PROGRAM
Mission of Darüşşafaka Schools Mathematics Department is to raise individuals who can use mathematical language; who can transfer mathematical knowledge to another field and relate knowledge to real-life situations; who can perceive the aesthetics in the nature of mathematics; and who has enthusiasm to study and discipline as well as mathematical skills such as reasoning, correlation, classification, modeling, generalization, and deduction.

COURSES
In Mathematics department, mathematics is offered in middle school; mathematics and geometry are offered in high school. While instruction language is Turkish in middle school, mathematics and geometry lessons are offered in English in high school.

SPECIFIC GOAL OF MATHEMATICS PROGRAM
Students are expected to transform mathematical knowledge to different representation forms and relate knowledge to their daily life. They are also expected to support each other while we aim to create the environment where students have a chance to learn mathematics by having fun in a highly motivated environment.

METHOD
The correct use of technology in our classes is of paramount importance in this field to ensure that students enjoy learning mathematics and to enrich mathematics content. History of mathematics topics and life story of relevant mathematicians are also included in course schedule. Interdisciplinary activities based on content of the lesson give students opportunities to explore real life applications of mathematics. Apart from in-class activities, we raise awareness about the fact that maths could only be learned in a specific discipline and students should give individual effort to learn it.

STUDENT MONITORING AND HOMEWORK CHECK
Every week, students are given short exams to review what has been learned last week. Teachers definitely give homework at the end of the lessons.  Homework and short exams are checked by subject teacher and then they give feedback to students. Thus academic development of students is followed on a weekly basis. Extra activities are planned when necessary. Behavioral development of students is also monitored during student learning process and activities are carried out for mathematics objectives.

RESOURCES
MEB (National Ministry of Education) textbooks are used in middle school and high school. Apart from MEB books, College Algebra and Trigonometry by Ratti, McVVaters is used as a supplementary textbook in high school. Lecture notes, activities, worksheets prepared by single subject teachers using Turkish resources and foreign resources are used.

Mathematics manipulatives; Cabri II Plus for the activities carried out using smart boards; mathematics programs such as Geometry Sketchpad, Geogebra are used.

ASSESSMENT AND EVALUATION
In Maths and Geometry classes, two or three written exams and at least two oral grades are given depending on the weekly lesson hours in every academic term. Written exams are centrally scheduled for each level and assessed by teachers collectively. Each exam will include all outcomes covered since the beginning of the academic year. Oral assessment is given separately for middle school and high school based on oral assessment rubrics, in-class performances of students, homework performances, short exam achievements and also other in-class activities, homework, performance assignments

DEPARTMENT ACTIVITIES

SALIH ZEKI MATHEMATICS RESEARCH PROJECT COMPETITION
Darüşşafaka organizes “Salih Zeki Mathematics Research Project Competition” for high school students in Istanbul in the memory of Salih Zeki, a mathematician and science historian who graduated at the head of his class from Darüşşafaka in 1882.

WORLD PI DAY
We organize many activities that celebrate Pi Day on March 14th every year to give our students a chance to explore the relationship of mathematics with different disciplines, learn about the history of basic mathematics, and develop different perspectives for mathematics.

In addition, our students represent Darüşşafaka Schools in national and international mathematics competitions.
